Days of the Week Associated with Hindu Gods
Did you know that the days of the week are based on the Hindu Gods.
Monday - Shiva
Monday is associated with the moon, which is one of the reasons why Shiva is often depicted with the crescent moon adorning his head. Shiva's role as the destroyer and creator aligns with the cyclical nature of the lunar phases. The moon is believed to have once been cursed by a sage. The moon fervently prayed to Shiva and received a boon.
Tuesday - Hanuman
Tuesday is governed by Mars, a planet associated with energy, courage, and determination -- many of the qualities embodied by Hanuman. Hanuman is believed to have been born on Tuesday, and also found Sita Ma in Lanka on a Tuesday.
Wednesday - Ganesh
Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, the planet associated with intellect and communication. Since Ganesh is considered to be the epitome of wisdom and new beginnings, he is often associated with this day.
Thursday - Vishnu
Thursday is associated with planet Jupiter, known as Brihaspati in Hinduism, the revered teacher and guru of the gods. Brihaspati is closely linked to Vishnu, who is often depicted as the ultimate source of knowledge and the preserver of the universe.
Friday - Laxmi
Friday is traditionally associated with Venus, the planet often linked to love, beauty, and prosperity. Both Venus and Laxmi are considered feminine principles, representing nurturing, creativity, and abundance.
Saturday - Shani
Saturday is governed by the planet Saturn, which in vedic astrology is known as Shani, who is the Hindu god of justice and time. Saturn is associated with discipline, karma, patience, and structure. These qualities align with Shani's role as the impartial judge who rewards or punishes based on one's deeds.
Sunday - Surya
Sunday marks the beginning of a new week, symbolizing rebirth and renewal, much like the sunrise. This aligns perfectly with Surya's role as the source of life and energy.
